Ship Models


Ship models are built to scale duplication or representation of sea going vessels. Traditionally, ship models have been made of wood. These days, the amateur kits provide models made of plastic. Sheet metal is also used to build model ships.

The age old Egyptians were the first to make detailed ship models that were part of interment. Wooden model ships and the crew with their details were included in the coffin. Basically, it was believed that these ship models transport the soul of the deceased to the next world.

On the other hand, naval concepts have been defined to the modern world using such service models. From the twelfth century to the fifteenth century, we can find various types of model ships mounted in various churches. During ceremonies, the vessels and the crew members were sanctified.

Ship modeling started first in the United States. 1900 onwards it became more popular. In the year 1920, ship model kits were obtainable in case guide parts. In 1930s, when the magazine named “Popular Science” published about model ships, these became even more popular. After publication in the magazine, building model ships became a hobby as well. Ship models have modernized the old world pastimes and hobbies!
