The kitchen is the heart of the home, as most families gather in the kitchen to eat and talk about the day’s happenings. When you entertain guests, you will most likely spend time in the kitchen talking as you cook or do the dishes. Make sure your kitchen is warm and inviting by giving it a cheerful makeover. Follow these simple steps to make the kitchen a fun place for the entire family to enjoy.

A favorite place is usually a happy place. Just think of Disneyland, the happiest place on earth! It’s a beloved destination for young and adults alike. Making your kitchen a cheerful place starts with having good lighting. Take advantage of natural light by using fluffy curtains, window blinds or sheer panels. Even at night, these window covers can make peeping out to the starry sky effortless.

An area rug is a nice touch to complete the warm and friendly atmosphere in the kitchen. Choose rugs made of light fabrics such as a cotton rug for easy wash and dry. Synthetic rugs are also acceptable because of their resistance to stain. An outdoor rug can be used especially if your kitchen is always bustling with people. Such rug can stand high-traffic and won’t suffer as much from wear and tear. Talking with loved ones will be even more relaxing with your feet cushioned on a soft rug.

Besides the decorations, you can also add personalized items such as photographs and your children’s artworks. Eating with the family, catching up on the day’s events or just chilling out while munching on snacks will be more fun as you reminisce and share a laugh about the photos. The personal stuff also reinforces the feelings of warmth and family time in the kitchen.

Paint your walls a bright, cheerful color such as buttercup yellow or lavender. Soft colors will make your kitchen appear bigger and reflect natural light to make the room appear bright and inviting. When you repaint the walls, you could also consider giving your cabinets a makeover. If you can’t afford to replace your cabinets, a fresh coat of paint can make them look like new. White cabinets are a great choice to match any wall color or appliances.

Photographs are not only for living room display. Give that familial feel to your kitchen too. You can hang framed photos on the wall or transform your refrigerator into a mural. Display wacky shots and vacation trips. Reminiscing over those photos over snacks is a nice family bonding time.

Lastly, don’t forget to keep your kitchen clean. Delegate chores even if you are voted as the family’s chef to maintain its polished look. Let’s admit it, the kitchen if not properly cared for can really take the toll of grease, oil, spills and incessant meal-preparing activities. Not to mention the unpleasant sight of unwashed dishes piled up in the sink. Decorate your kitchen for a new look only if you and your family are willing to maintain its cleanliness. Otherwise, poor decors the dirt and clutter will just ruin the supposedly cheery mood and the pretty kitchen design.
